Pancino Throws No-Hitter

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Sophomore Kiana Pancino turned in Stanford's first no-hitter since 2014 as the Cardinal defeated Army, 12-0, in five innings Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Pancino, who moves to 2-1 overall, had three strikeouts and yielded just one walk in the shutout.

It was the first no-hitter for Stanford (5-5) since Feb. 8, 2014, when Madi Schreyer and Nyree White combined for one against Western Michigan. The last Cardinal to toss a solo no-hitter was Kelsey Stevens against Virginia on Feb. 23, 2013.

Stanford's bats came alive against the Black Nights (1-7) as eight different Cardinal registered at least one hit. Stanford finished with 12 runs on 10 hits and two errors, while Army had four miscues in the game.

Sophomore outfielder Hannah Howell was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Senior second baseman Lauren Wegner notched a two-run single in the second and scored a run in the fourth.

The Cardinal led 5-0 after three and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth. Six Stanford players reached base before Army could record its first out of the inning.

In Stanford's first game Sunday, the Cardinal was shut out by UC Riverside (5-3), 2-0.

After three scoreless innings, the Highlanders got on the board with an inside-the-park home run by left fielder Seanna Garewal.

The Cardinal threatened in the bottom of the fifth after designated player Molly Fowkes reached on an error and advanced to second with just one out. UC Riverside pitcher Tayler Misfeldt (4-1) fanned the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The Highlanders tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when shortstop Hannah Rodriguez hit a double down the left line to bring home Jenna Curtan.

Stanford closes out the tournament on Monday at 11 a.m. against Weber State.
