Cardinal Cruises Past LBSU

Scoresheet Opens in a new window

IRVINE, Calif. – Madison Berggren and Aria Fischer had hat tricks and No. 1 Stanford used a big third quarter to beat No. 19 Long Beach State 15-3 on the first day of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

The Cardinal (8-0) will next play the winner of No. 8 Pacific and No. 9 Michigan tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.

Stanford was in front 7-2 at the half and put the game out of reach with an 8-0 third quarter. Hannah Shabb won the sprint and the Cardinal scored on its first possession when Makenzie Fischer found her sister Aria in front of the cage. Shabb nabbed a steal and then the elder Fischer again set up her teammate, this time junior Kat Klass, for a goal.

Jordan Raney hit the post in the 6-on-5 and the Long Beach State took a timeout to regroup, but when action resumed the Cardinal kept coming. A steal from Klass led to another goal for Aria Fischer and then Jordan Raney got on the board with 3:25 on the clock to make it 11-2.

Klass hit Makenzie Fischer for a goal at 2:28 and then Berggren went back-to-back at 2:03 and 1:23. To set up the second, the junior drew an exclusion and then scored on the power play.

Long Beach State's only shot of the period came with under 30 seconds remaining and was easily stopped by Julia Hermann. With three seconds until the horn, Sarah Klass scored for the fourth time this season off a feed from Mackenzie Wiley.

Mackenzie Wiley and Aria Fischer gave Stanford a 2-1 advantage after one and five second-quarter scores from Katie Dudley, Kat Klass, Makenzie Fischer, Shannon Cleary and Berggren made it 7-2. The 49ers got their third and final goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Julia Hermann played the first 29:20 in the cage and made seven saves. Katrina Sturm came on for the final 2:40 and made one stop.
