Mendelblatt Victory

STANFORD, Calif. – In three regattas over the weekend, Stanford sailing won the Mendelblatt Team Race and finished as the runner-up at the McIntyre Team Race and Charleston Women's.

Stanford was dominant in South Florida. The Cardinal went 19-1 against the nine schools in the Mendelblatt Team Races. Skipper Jack Parkin and crew Elena VandenBerg won all but two races, and combined with skipper Will La Dow and crew Kathryn Booker, and skipper Romain Screve and crew Taylor Kirkpatrick and Madeline Bubb to a perfect 8-0 record in the first two rounds. The Cardinal went 3-1 in the Top 5, with the only defeat to Charelston.

Stanford hosted the McIntrye Team Race and was one race from taking the title. The Cardinal finished with an overall record of 14-3, while UC Santa Barbara finished at 15-2. In the 10-team regatta, Stanford went 8-1 in the round robin and 5-0 against the Top 6. Among the Final Four races, Stanford went 1-2 with a victory over Hawaii and losses to the Gauchos and Eckerd. The Cardinal were led by skipper Nestor Cano and crew Olivia Gugliemini, skipper William Marshall and crew Cassie Obel, and skipper Jacob Rosenberg and crew Stephanie Houck.

Among 13 teams in South Carolina, Stanford finished second to the host Cougars. The Cardinal finished second in both the A and B divisions to total 88 points – just behind Charleston's 80. In the A division, senior skipper Julia Lambert and freshman Victoria Thompson were two points out of the top spot with 48 points – only a disqualification in the 11th race bumped them from first. Skipper Christina Sakellaris and senior crew Sarah Placek won three races and were second in the B division with 40 points.

After a weekend off from competition, the Cardinal will host the Stanford Team Race as well as travel to the SMC Team Race and Navy Women's, March 10-11.
