NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 1 Stanford dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 2 Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon in a battle of the nation's top two programs.
The latest chapter in a rivalry between two of the country's annual NCAA title contenders went in favor of Vanderbilt (4-0), which swept its homestand following a victory over No. 16 Baylor on Friday.
Since 2015, Stanford and Vanderbilt have hooked up five times, with the Cardinal prevailing in three of those meetings. Both Commodore victories have come in Nashville.
Playing short-handed without senior All-American Melissa Lord, Stanford battled hard in singles but was unable to avoid the shutout.
After Vanderbilt captured the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, the Commodores continued their momentum and clinched the match when Astra Sharma outlasted Michaela Gordon 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot of the lineup. The clincher was one of three singles matches that ended up being decided in three sets.
Stanford returns to The Farm for its home opener against Saint Mary's on Friday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 p.m.
