FRESNO, Calif. - Gabriel Townsell, Isaiah Locsin and Paul Fox all registered falls to power Stanford past Fresno State, 27-15, Saturday at the Save Mart Center.
Stanford won six of the 10 bouts against Fresno State (4-13) to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The dual started at 174 pounds where fifth-year senior Keaton Subjeck found himself trailing freshman Dominic Kincaid, 6-1 after the first period. Subjeck, who is ranked ninth nationally, went to work in the second, cutting into the lead with two takedowns. He added a takedown, an escape a stalling point and 1:07 of riding time in the third to tie the bout, 10-10. In the sudden victory period, Subjeck scored the winning takedown with 26 seconds left to improve to 22-6 overall and 8-1 in duals.
The Bulldogs won the next two bouts, including a fall at 197 pounds, to take a 9-3 lead in the dual.
At heavyweight, No. 5 Nathan Butler dominated AJ Nevills, 7-1. Butler led 3-0 after two periods. Nevills, the younger brother Cardinal alum Zach Nevills, chose nuetral to start the final frame. Butler scored another takedown and was awarded a stalling point before Nevills was able to escape. Butler tacked on 3:08 of riding time for his 22nd win of the year.
At 125 pounds, Townsell trailed Sean Williams early in the first, but recorded a takedown late in the opening period for a 3-2 lead. Townsell earned the fall with just one second left in the second period to give Stanford a 12-9 advantage in the dual. Townsell moves to 17-10 overall and 8-2 in duals after recording his fourth fall of the year.
The Cardinal continued to roll at 133 pounds as Mason Pengilly earned a 6-1 decision over Trevor Williams. It was the season debut for Pengilly and pushed the Cardinal lead to 15-9.
Locsin made it 21-9 Stanford with a fall in 2:51 over Chris DeLoza at 141 pounds. Locsin picked up his 17th win of the year and his team-best six fall.
The Bulldogs ended the Cardinal run at 149 pounds as No. 19 Khristian Olivas posted an 8-3 decision over Stanford's Jake Barry.
Fox scored the final points of the night for the Cardinal, registering a fall in 4:18 over Greg Gaxiola at 157 pounds. Fox is now 17-5 overall and 6-1 in duals this season.
Stanford returns to The Farm next week to host Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 10. The dual will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
