Full Weekend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Stanford fencing team completed a busy weekend Sunday at the Northwestern Duals, with the No. 10 men compiling a 7-3 overall mark and the women finishing 2-8.

All bouts were contested at the Castellan Family Center on the campus of Notre Dame.

The Cardinal men (13-3) upset the top-ranked Fighting Irish on Sunday, 15-12. The team also recorded victories against North Carolina, Penn, Wayne State, Lawrence, Cleveland State and Detroit, but sustained close losses to Princeton (14-13) and Duke (14-13).

"To knock off the defending national champs was huge for us," said co-head Lisa Posthumus. "It came down to the last bout in epee and junior Nicholas Campell-Kruger won in overtime. Great team effort."

Stanford nearly took down perennial final four participant Princeton, losing on the last touch.
Standouts for the Cardinal included freshman Lucas Orts, who went 18-3 in foil, and sophomore Robin Cheong, who fashioned a 23-5 record in epee.

The women (6-11) earned two victories Sunday, downing Lawrence and Fairleigh Dickinson. The group also gave No. 1 Notre Dame a tough battle on Sunday before falling, 17-10.

"We had many great individual performances," Posthumus said. "Despite the outcomes, I was very encouraged and the future is bright."

Freshman Madeline Liao posted an impressive 12-4 record in foil, while junior Carly Weber-Levine went 16-13 in sabre.

The Cardinal advanced 25 fencers (13 women, 12 men) to the NCAA Western Regional Championships on March 10 at Cal Tech in Pasadena, California. The top individual finishers from each weapon move on to the NCAA Championships, March 22-25 at Penn State.
