Bruins Block Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. – Without setter Russell Dervay, the Cardinal came out flat and dropped a 25-12, 25-16, 18-25, 25-21 decision to No. 3 UCLA, Thursday, at Maples Pavilion.
 
Dervay missed the match due to injury, giving the start to opposite turned setter Mason Tufuga. The sophomore, who has appeared in 14 matches this season, finished with 29 assists and nine digs. As a team, Stanford (3-14, 1-5 MPSF) hit .244.
 
UCLA (15-4, 4-1 MPSF) was more physical in the first two sets, and finished with 11.5 blocks for the match. The Bruins hit .319 and tallied 10 aces while snapping a three-match losing streak.
 
Freshman opposite Jaylen Jasper continued to pour in the kills for the Cardinal, totaling 16 on .243 hitting and five digs. It marked his fourth straight match with double-digit kills.
 


Freshman middle blocker Kyler Presho, who ranks sixth in the conference with a .395 hitting percentage, had seven kills on a .417 attack percentage, while freshman outside hitter JP Reilly finished with six kills, three digs and an ace.
 
Freshman outside Leo Henken replaced sophomore Eric Beatty in the second set and totaled six kills on seven errorless swings. Fifth-year senior Kevin Rakestraw was held to three kills and two blocks. Junior Matt Klassen came off the bench as a serving sub and tallied an ace. Senior libero Evan Enriques finished with five digs and two assists.
 
After struggling to find its offensive rhythm in the first two sets, Stanford committed just two hitting errors in the remaining two frames. The Cardinal tallied 16 kills on a .467 attack percentage in the third and notched nine kills on 13 attempts with zero errors to hit .692 in the fourth.
 
Senior opposite Christian Hessenauer led UCLA with 16 kills and six blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah added eight kills on .400 hitting and seven blocks.
 
Stanford closes out the week on Saturday against No. 8 Pepperdine. The Cardinal and Waves will square off at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. Admission is free.
