STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's national championship-winning women's soccer team will embark on a foreign tour to Spain next week with matches against RCD Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.
"We are excited for this fantastic opportunity for our student-athletes to gain experience overseas against top-level competition," said Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe. "We are looking forward to a productive week of training at some of the world's most prestigious clubs, and another chance to grow as a group on the road."
The Cardinal first travels to Barcelona to train at the Camp Nou Stadium before taking on RCD Espanyol on Tuesday, March 27. Stanford then travels to Madrid for a match against Atletico Madrid on March 29 and training at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Stanford claimed its second national championship on Dec. 3 against UCLA in Orlando, Florida. The Cardinal finished the season on a 22-game win streak, outscoring opponents 91-9 with senior captain Andi Sullivan capturing the MAC Hermann Trophy in January.
Freshman Catarina Macario led the nation in points (50) and assists (16), Michelle Xiao won the NCAA Elite 90 Award with the highest grade-point average the College Cup, and 11 Cardinal were named to the All-Pac-12 teams. Following the College Cup, Jaye Boissiere was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player and Tierna Davidson was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
