SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Stanford's first and second varsity eight boats competed in preliminary racing at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday.

The varsity eight, competing for the Copley Cup, finished second in the first round of the competition with a time of 6:13.393 to advance to the second round. Yale took first in Stanford's heat, registering a time of 5:59.426.

In the second round, the Cardinal finished first in its heat with a time of 5:52.752, defeating Navy's 5:57.195 by over four seconds. Stanford advances to Sunday's Grand Final at 10:40 a.m. PT, and will compete against Yale, Northeastern, California, Penn and Navy.

"Our morning race against defending national champion Yale was difficult, losing seats throughout," said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "This afternoon we righted the ship, defeating Navy."

The second varsity eight, competing for the Sharp Memorial Cup, advanced to Sunday's final by finishing second in its heat with a time of 6:16.893. Cal placed fist, recording a 6:00.095 time, while British Columbia placed third with a time of 6:19.982. Stanford will race in the final at 9:28 a.m. on Sunday.

"In a loaded 24-boat field, we raced hard and are excited to be in tomorrow's field with Cal, Yale, Penn, Northeastern and Navy," added Amerkhanian.

Stanford's third varsity eight will participate in its lone race of the weekend Sunday morning at 8:48 a.m. against California, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, San Diego and UC Davis.
