SANTA MONICA, Calif. – No. 14 Stanford extended its winning streak to ten with wins over No. 19 Washington and No. 11 Arizona in the first day of the Pac-12 Invitational in Santa Monica, California.
The Cardinal opened the day with a 4-1 win over conference foe Washington.
No. 1 pairing Kathryn Plummer/Sunny Villapando and No. 2 pairing Morgan Hentz/Amelia Smith made quick work of the huskies, each securing match victories for the Cardinal. Hentz and Smith finished first after a 21-18, 21-13 win, followed by Plummer's and Villapando's 21-13, 22-20 victory in straight sets.
Washington earned its lone point of the dual at the three. Carly DeHoog and Shane McPherson defeated Stanford's Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico, 21-14, 21-15.
Stanford went on to clinch the match with straight set victories from Payton Chang/Catherine Raquel at the four and Kat Anderson/Caitlin Keefe at the five.
The Cardinal looked to extend its streak in an afternoon dual with Arizona. This time around, Stanford opened the match even with the Wildcats after the first two matches, 1-1.
The No. 1 pairing of Plummer and Villapando gave Stanford a 2-1 lead with its straight-sets victory, 21-18, 22-20.
The No. 2 pair, Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, clinched the dual with a 24-22, 21-15 win over Arizona's Makenna Martin and Mia Mason. It was the duo's tenth consecutive match win this season.
Stanford is back in action on Sunday for the second day of the Pac-12 Invitational. The Cardinal will take on Arizona State at 11 a.m. PT and No. 4 USC at 1 p.m.
