Card Closes SoCal Swing

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 13 Stanford split a pair of duals Tuesday, defeating Cal State Los Angeles and falling to No. 5 Long Beach State to conclude the team's run of six matches in four days.

"We gained lots of experience playing in the wind in both Santa Monica and Long Beach these last few days, and we are so grateful for the amount of fan support we've received across California," said head coach Andrew Fuller.  "The team is enthusiastic to take lessons learned over spring break and carry them into the final phases of our season."

No. 13 Stanford opened the day's action with a 5-0 win over Cal State Los Angeles to improve to 12-5 on the season.

The Cardinal earned two early wins at the Nos. 2 & 4 positions. Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith made quick work of their opponents with a pair of 21-9 wins to secure a point. Shannon Richardson and Catherine Raquel, the Cardinal's No. 4 pairing, also turned in consecutive 21-9 set wins for Stanford's second point.

Stanford clinched the match at the three, where partners Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico won in straight sets handily, 21-8, 21-6.

In the second match of the day, Stanford took on #5 Long Beach State, its fourth top-five opponent and sixth match against a top-five team this season.

The 49ers swept the match, 5-0, bringing Stanford's record to 12-6 on the season. The Cardinal dropped each match in straight sets.

After taking the upcoming weekend off from play, Stanford returns home on April 7 & 8 to host the Stanford West Coast Classic. The Cardinal will welcome Cal Poly, Pacific, UCLA, and Saint Mary's to The Farm for the two-day event. Stanford's matches against UCLA and Saint Mary's on Sunday, April 8th will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
