Staying in Spain

STANFORD, Calif. – Three current and two future Cardinal are set to join up with the United States U-20 National Team from March 29-April 10 for matches against youth national teams in Spain.

Head coach Jitka Klimkova named a 24-player squad to compete in the U-23 La Manga Tournament, which features the U-23's of France and Norway and the U-20's of England, China and Norway.

Defenders Kiki Pickett and Sam Hiatt, along with forward Civana Kuhlmann, were the three current Cardinal to make the squad. Forward Sophia Smith and defender Naomi Girma, who recently signed National Letters of Intent to play for Stanford in 2018, were also named to the squad – Smith and Girma were two of five players named in the squad who have not played in college.

Last month, Pickett, Hiatt, Kuhlmann, Smith and Girma helped the team qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will take place Aug. 5-24 in France. The United States opens the tournament on Aug. 6 against Japan before facing Paraguay on Aug. 9 and Spain on Aug. 13.
