STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Jaylen Jasper recorded double-digit kills for the fifth straight match, but Stanford was swept by No. 8 Pepperdine, Saturday, at Maples Pavilion.
Jasper tallied a match-high 16 kills and had five digs for the Cardinal (3-15, 1-6 MPSF), which hit .247 as a team. Pepperdine (10-4, 4-2 MPSF) posted a .305 attack percentage and finished with 7.5 blocks and four aces.
Sophomore Mason Tufuga started his second consecutive match at setter as the Cardinal was again without an injured Russell Dervay. Tufuga racked up a career-best 35 assists and matched his career-high with three blocks.
After hitting just .172 in the opening set, the Cardinal posted a .370 attack percentage in the third, but could not take a lead against the Waves. The third set went into overtime as the teams traded points back-and-forth before Pepperdine came out on top, 27-25.
Freshman middle blocker Kyler Presho hit .636 with seven kills on 11 errorless swings to go with three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Eric Beatty also recorded seven kills and finished with eight digs and an ace.
Senior libero Evan Enriques collected a match-high 12 digs to anchor the Stanford defense. Sophomore Jacob Thoenen came off the bench and registered two of the Cardinal's three aces.
Pepperdine was led by junior David Wieczorek and senior Alex Harthaller, who posted 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Robert Mullahey controlled the offense with 31 assists.
Stanford continues its seven-match homestand on Friday against UC San Diego. The Cardinal and Tritons will square off at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
