CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Stanford's Valarie Allman won the women's discus Thursday with the third-longest throw of her life, at a throws and pole vault meet at the Chula Vista Elite Training Center.
Allman, third at the U.S. Championships last year and a two-time Pac-12 champ, won the high-level competition with a toss of 206-1 1/2 (62.83 meters). Among the other competitors were reigning Pac-12 discus champ Maggie Ewen of Arizona State, 2016 Olympian Kelsey Card, former Stanford star Summer Pierson, and German national-teamer Julia Ritter.
Allman's best mark, her best this year, came on her second throw and was her only legal mark of the competition. She fouled twice and passed three times. Ewen, this season's collegiate leader, was second at 204-11 1/2 (62.47m). The marks would be 1-2 among collegians this year except that they do not count toward NCAA qualifying because they were not performed at a collegiate meet. However, they do count toward USATF and IAAF qualification.
Allman strengthened her hold on the No. 2 spot on Stanford's all-time list, by coming within 1 foot, 7 inches of Olympian Carol Cady's school record of 207-8 (63.30m) that has stood since 1983. Allman has two higher marks in her career, each longer than Cady's school record, but they came in 2017 when Allman redshirted. However, this was her longest throw while competing for Stanford. Her previous best was 201-6 (61.42m) that earned her third at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
In the women's shot put, Stanford's Lena Giger at 53-9 1/4 (16.39m) was second to Sweden's Fanny Roos 59-3 3/4 (18.08m).
