Outlasted by Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – Whitney Burks homered and it was a tie game halfway through, but No. 4 Oregon outlasted Stanford, 4-1, in the softball series finale on Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Junior starter Carolyn Lee went the full six innings for the Cardinal, and allowed just six hits. Burks and Teaghan Cowles accounted for Stanford's two hits as Burks finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run, and Cowles was 1-for-3 with a single in the third.

Oregon (38-7, 12-3 Pac-12) scored first with a two-out single in the first inning.

It remained 1-0 until Stanford (22-23, 2-13 Pac-12) tied the game in the fourth. Burks launched a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right center for her team-leading fourth home run of the year.

The Ducks took the lead back in the home half with three two-out runs, including a two-run pinch-hit home run by Shannon Rhodes.

Oregon kept the Cardinal off the base paths in the final three innings to complete the sweep.

Stanford returns home for a three-game series against Cal, beginning on Friday at 6:45 p.m. PT, continuing on Saturday at 5 p.m., and concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Friday is another Trading Card set giveaway, bingo, poster and visor making station and postgame chalk talk – as well as an appearance from the Stanford band. Saturday there will be a petting zoo from 4-6 p.m., and postgame running the bases. Sunday is Pups in the Park, free dog bowls to dog owners, phone fan giveaway and postgame autographs.
