Massaro Wins Pac-12 Honor

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior defender Julia Massaro was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference office.

Massaro broke two school records in a 17-7 win over rival Cal on Friday. She set the Stanford single-game record with 11 draw controls, and in doing so, she also surpassed the school single-season record for draw controls.

A native of Purchase, New York, she is just the second Cardinal with double-digit draw controls in a game as she passed Kelly Myers' previous record of 10 from March 8, 2015. Meanwhile, Massaro needed just two draw controls to surpass Lucy Dikeou's 64 draw controls from 2015, and became the first Cardinal to surpass 70 in a season with 74 after Friday's record-setting performance. She also led the team with four ground balls and three caused turnovers against Cal -- both season highs.

This is the second such honor for Massaro, who also earned the accolade on April 2 after she recorded eight draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers in a weekend sweep at USC and Arizona State.

Massaro and the 13th-ranked Cardinal finished the regular season at 13-4 overall, and 8-2 in the first-ever Pac-12 Conference season. The Cardinal earned a first round bye and the No. 2 seed at the Pac-12 Tournament, April 26-29 in Boulder, Colo. Stanford will play on Friday at 3 p.m. PT in the first-ever Pac-12 Tournament. The Cardinal awaits the winner of the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds.
