STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford softball dropped a midweek matchup with Fresno State, 8-2, on Tuesday at Smith Family Stadium.

Fresno State (20-15) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and scored once in the second and third innings for a 5-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added two more in the top of the sixth before Stanford (20-14) struck back in the home half.

Sophomores Teaghan Cowles and Hannah Howell singled to put runners at first and second with two outs. Fellow sophomore Kristina Inouye followed with a triple to right to bring both home and close within 7-2.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the seventh and the Cardinal left the bases loaded to end the game.

Howell finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk to extend her hit streak to four games. In the circle, Carolyn Lee struck out six in 5.2 innings of relief.

Stanford resumes Pac-12 play this weekend with a road trip to Los Angeles. The Cardinal takes on No. 3 UCLA in a three-game set that begins on Friday at 7 p.m. PT, continues Saturday at 6 p.m., and concludes Sunday at noon.
