Captains Announced

STANFORD, Calif. - Six Stanford student-athletes were selected by their teammates on Thursday to serve as team captains for the 2018 season. Fifth-year seniors Alameen Murphy, Bobby Okereke and Brandon Simmons, seniors JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Bryce Love, and junior K.J. Costello will lead the Cardinal. 

Murphy and Simmons were each captains last season. Murphy, a cornerback and native of Fort Washington, Maryland, has played in every game over the last two seasons. A science, technology and society graduate pursuing his master's degree in media studies, Murphy is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention. Simmons, a free safety and communication major from Mansfield, Texas, was All-Pac-12 honorable mention each of the last two years.

A product of Inman, South Carolina, Arcega-Whiteside was All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season after he led the team in receptions (48), receiving yards (781) and receiving touchdowns (9). The international relations major was a Pac-12 All-Academic selection in 2016.

Love, a human biology major from Wake Forest, North Carolina, was last year's Doak Walker Award winner, Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and Lombardi Award winner. He paced Power 5 running backs in rushing yards, rushing yards/game, yards/carry and number of runs of 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards, and his 13 runs of 50 or more yards set an FBS record.

A management science and engineering graduate pursuing his master's degree in media studies, Okereke was third on the team with 96 tackles last season. The Santa Ana, California, native was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection.

Costello started seven games for the Cardinal last year and finished with 1,573 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. A native of Coto de Caza, California, the political science major earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors last season.

Stanford begins the 2018 campaign on Aug. 31 against San Diego State. Kickoff at Stanford Stadium is set for 6 p.m. PT. on FS1.
