STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Ben Hallock recorded a hat trick in the first 4:09 of the match as No. 3 Stanford netted the first nine goals of the contest, en route to a 16-3 victory over No. 17 San Jose State Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal improved to 8-0 on the year, matching its best start since 2015. Saturday's match with San Jose State (4-4) was the first of an 11-game homestand that continues next Saturday with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener against No. 1 USC at 2 p.m. at Avery Aquatic Center.

After not scoring a goal in a match for the first time in his 28-game career last Sunday, Hallock got on the board for the Cardinal in the first 35 seconds of Saturday's match. He didn't stop there, posting a hat trick within the first 4:09 and finishing the first quarter with four goals as Stanford raced out to a 6-0 lead.

Senior Marco Stanchi converted a penalty shot to open the scoring for the Cardinal in the second quarter. Junior Dylan Woodhead and sophomore Tyler Abramson added scores in the final minutes of the second as the Cardinal extended its advantage to 9-0.

Meanwhile, Lewis had another strong performance with nine saves altogether. He made two nice stops from close range in consecutive fashion in the final minutes of the first quarter. Lewis and the Cardinal nearly posted a first-half shutout, but San Jose State's Justin Pickering got one through with 29 seconds remaining in the half.

Holding a 9-1 halftime advantage, Stanford continued to control the pace. The Cardinal scored all three goals in the third quarter with Stanchi finding the back of the cage for his second of the day. Dylan Woodhead put Stanford up 11-1 late in the third and his brother, freshman Quinn Woodhead, scored his first goal at home 53 seconds later to give Stanford a 12-1 advantage.

Fourth-quarter scores from Duncan Mactavish, Josh Orrick, Parrish and Abramson gave the Cardinal the 16-3 victory.

Abramson continued his streak of scoring multiple goals in every match with two in Saturday's win. He ranks second to Bennett Williams (25) on the team in scoring with 24 goals. Hallock, who has 18 goals for the season, has now scored at least four goals in a game for the sixth time in his 29 career contests.
