CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Beavers made an early goal stand and No. 10 Stanford had its 14-match Pac-12 unbeaten streak snapped with a 1-0 loss at Oregon State on Thursday night.
"Oregon State settled into the game better than we did," head coach Jeremy Gunn said. "In a match with very few open chances they buried one and deserved to take the lead. We gave them a head start, they were able to hold onto it and we paid the penalty for letting a team get a little too happy in first half."
The defeat was Stanford's first to Oregon State (6-4-2, 2-2) since Oct. 23, 2011 and snapped the Cardinal's 11-match winning streak in the series. Stanford (6-2-3, 3-1) had outscored the Beavers 13-0 in the previous six meetings. It was OSU's first goal against the Cardinal since Nov. 9, 2014.
Oregon State's winner came in the 23rd minute from Gloire Amanda, who drilled one in at the far post after the ball had gone wide and was touched forward by Sofiane Djeffal.
Logan Panchot nearly sent the game into overtime with a strike in the 89th minute to the top left corner, but Beaver keeper Adrian Fernandez made a diving stop with his right hand to knock the ball down and secure the win.
"In the second half we were sharper, the passing was crisper and we had Oregon State on the back foot," Gunn added. "Logan forced their keeper into a very good save on a free kick earlier in the game and that stop at the end from a similar spot was spectacular."
Stanford returns to action Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. when it plays at Washington in a match televised on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Washington.
