Cranny, Fisher: Scholar-Athletes

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's Elise Cranny and Grant Fisher were named Pac-12 Cross Country Scholar-Athletes of the Year on Friday prior to the conference championships at Stanford Golf Course.

Cranny, a human biology major and fifth-year senior, carries a 3.87 grade-point average and is an 11-time All-America in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. Fisher, an eight-time All-America, is an electrical engineering major with a 3.59 GPA.

Cranny is the third Cardinal to win the women's award, joining Arianna Lambie in 2007 and Aisling Cuffe in 2015. Fisher joins Neftalem Araia (2007), Elliott Heath (2010), Chris Derrick (2011), and Tyler Stutzman (2013) as Stanford men's winners.

Cranny is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, with first-team selections the past two years. She burst onto the collegiate scene in 2014, placing second at the Pac-12 cross country championships to earn conference Freshman of the Year honors. She is a two-time Pac-12 track champion, a two-time NCAA individual runner-up, and a three-time NCAA 1,500-meter finalist. This year, she won the Stanford Invitational and was fourth in her race at the high-powered Wisconsin Pre-Nationals Invitational.

Fisher is a two-time USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was the 2017 USTFCCCA Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was the 2017 NCAA outdoor champion in the 5,000 and a two-time Pac-12 champ in cross country and track. Fisher has a chance to be the first Stanford male since Grant Robison in 2001-02 to win back-to-back Pac-12 cross-country titles.

To be eligible, student-athletes must be seniors in eligibility, on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Both athletic and academic accomplishments are taken into consideration in voting for the award. A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Pac-12's 24 sponsored sports.
