Fall Season Continues

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford competed in its annual Triple Distance Meet against California on Thursday at Avery Aquatic Center.

"Our training has been going very well, but we have not had many opportunities to race and it showed today," said the Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp. "Cal is an excellent team, and today will go a long way as we prepare for our trip to Austin in December as well as dual meet season in January and February."

The Cardinal fared best in the distance freestyle events with True Sweetser (9:06.59) winning the 1,000-yard freestyle, Johannes Calloni (4:26.50) winning the 500-yard freestyle and James Murphy winning the 200-yard freestyle.

Murphy (1:38.33) captured Stanford's first win of the day in the 200 free, followed by Johannes Calloni (1:39.97) in second and True Sweetser (1:40.11) in third. It came after the Golden Bears won the first five events, the 50-yard butterfly, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard breaststroke, 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard individual medley.

Jack Levant (48.55) kicked off the 100-yard events with second place in the 100-yard butterfly, ahead of Will Macmillan (48.96) in third. Patrick Conaton (48.86) followed it up with second place in the 100-yard backstroke with Benjamin Ho (49.10) in third.

Stanford claimed four of the top five spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, led by Hank Poppe (54.78) in second place. Matt Anderson (55.84), Daniel Roy (56.38) and Brennan Pastorek (57.10) rounded out the top five. Cole Cogswell (44.82) was Stanford's fastest man in the 100-yard freestyle, placing third, and Alex Liang (1:49.79) paced the Cardinal in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Cardinal dominated the 500-yard freestyle, led by Calloni (4:26.50) with the win. Sweetser (4:26.74) followed in second with James Murphy (4:28.98) in third place. Levant (1:48.49) was the fastest Stanford swimmer in the 200-yard butterfly with third, followed up by Alex Boratto (1:48.30) placing third in the 200-yard backstroke with Patrick Conaton (1:48.79) in fourth.

Daniel Roy (1:58.54) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke while Anderson (2:01.10) placed third and Poppe (2:02.80) took fourth. Gonzalez (1:39.13) turned in Stanford's fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle with second place.

Liang (4:00.82) led the way in the 400-yard individual medley, followed by DeVine (4:03.35) in fourth before Sweetser impressed in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Sweetser (9:06.59) won the event by nearly seven seconds while Matthew Hirschberger (9:17.70)

Stanford finished second in the final two events, the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Patrick Conaton, Matt Anderson, Will Macmillan and Cole Cogswell (1:29.08) finished runners-up in the 200 medley relay before DeVine, Gonzalez, Levant and Jordan Greenberg (1:22.37) took second in the 200 free relay.
