STANFORD, Calif. – Head coach John Kosty is pleased to announce the signing of Gabriel Miranda (Redondo Union HS, Redondo Beach, Calif.) to the Class of 2019.
Miranda, a 6-5 middle blocker out of Southern California Volleyball Club (SCVC), becomes the sixth player to join this year's recruiting haul along with Kevin Lamp, Adam Chang, Nathaniel Gates, Nathan Lietzke, and Will Rottman.
"Gabriel is just what we are looking for in this class. He is a highly passionate and dedicated young athlete that will bring a lot of offense and serving pressure to our gym," said Kosty. "Over the last six months, he has transformed himself into a physical presence with strength training and is absolutely thumping the ball. Aside from being a formidable volleyball player, he relishes the challenges of the classroom and will thrive at Stanford. Truly a high-character individual."
Miranda is no stranger to elite level volleyball as his parents are some of the most famous figures in the sport. His mother, Ana Paula Henkel, is consider one of the best players in Brazil's storied history. She led her teams in four Olympic Games (1992 and 1996 in indoor volleyball, 2004 and 2008 in beach volleyball). His father, Marcos Miranda, has had much influence on the modern game as a coach for numerous countries, including his native Brazil. In fact, he is credited as the father of Brazil's dynamic fast-tempo offense, which revolutionized international play.
Additionally, Miranda's stepfather, Carl Henkel, was an All-America player and helped UCLA win the 1989 NCAA championship. He later represented the USA in beach volleyball at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta with the legendary Sinjin Smith.
