Card Knocks Off No. 2 UCI

STANFORD, Calif. – Three Cardinal registered double-digit kills as No. 9 Stanford rallied to defeat No. 2 UC Irvine, 27-25, 17-25, 25-22, 27-25, Thursday, at Maples Pavilion.
 
Stanford (5-0) handed UC Irvine (5-1) its first loss of the season despite being out hit and out blocked. The Cardinal finished with 62 kills to UCI's 51 and held a 39-38 edge in digs.
 
Senior outside hitter Jordan Ewert had a season-high 20 kills on .289 hitting and five digs to lead all players. Sophomore opposite Jaylen Jasper added 17 kills and a career-high five blocks, including one on match point to seal the win.
 


Sophomore middle blocker Kyler Presho had a familiar face on the opposite sideline as his father, Mark, is an assistant coach for the Anteaters. The younger Presho was a threat in the middle all night, getting his hands on the ball and creating defensive opportunities for his teammates. He finished with 11 kills on .389 hitting, four digs and three blocks.
 
Setter Paul Bischoff turned in a season-high 52 assists and four kills. The reigning MPSF Defensive Player of the Week also had seven digs and a block assists. Junior outside hitter Eric Beatty racked up a team-high nine digs to go with five kills and two aces.
 
Junior middle blocker Stephen Moye recorded five kills and three blocks for the Cardinal. He also sparked team scoring runs from the service line. Fifth-year senior libero Kyle Dagostino anchored the defense with seven digs and had five assists.
 


UC Irvine was led by sophomore Joel Schnidmiller's 18 kill, while fifth-year senior Aaron Koubi had 13 kills on .455 hitting and eight digs. Junior middle blocker Scott Stadick finished with a match-high nine blocks.
 
Stanford and UCI will meet again on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Bay Area.
