Eight to Winter Cup

No. 2 Stanford takes a break from NCAA action this week as select Cardinal travel to the annual Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nev., where Stanford will vie for positions on the U.S. Senior National Team and to represent the U.S. in future competitions.

The competition begins Friday and runs through Sunday with the Cardinal sending Andrew Bitner, Grant Breckenridge, Ian Gunther, Bailey Perez, Curran Phillips, and alumni Akash Modi, Robert Neff and Eddie Penev to represent Stanford. For more information, please click here

Friday's competition will consist of two preliminary sessions. Those who qualify to the finals will then have a training session on Saturday before Sunday's final session.

With the exception of Phillips and Penev, all of Stanford's affiliated gymnasts will begin on high bar. Phillips will open on floor, while Penev will start on pommel horse.

Stanford most recently turned in the best pommel horse score in the nation this year, posting a 69.000 at California last Saturday night. The Cardinal won five of the six events, with Ryan Sheppard and Bryan Perla sharing top honors on the floor, Trevor DiGerolamo winning the still rings, Connor Lewis capturing the vault, Brody Malone finishing first in the parallel bars, and David Jessen topping all-comers in the high bar. As a team, the Card recorded a 415.800 score – once again the highest in the nation for the week.

Following Winter Cup, team competition resumes on February 23 when the Card hosts the International Collegiate Open, featuring Olympic Champion Japan and Cal, at 4 p.m. from Burnham Pavilion.
