Victorious in MPSF Opener

Scoresheet Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford opened its conference schedule against MPSF newcomer Indiana and routed the No. 19 Hoosiers 25-4 at Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday evening.

Makenzie Fischer poured in six goals, her third consecutive game with at least that many, while Madison Berggren and Lauren Indart added hat tricks of their own. The Cardinal (5-0) has scored 20 or more in four of its five to start 2019 and is averaging 22.6 goals per game.

Indiana took a momentary edge, scoring the game's first goal on the power play with 80 seconds gone by in the first quarter, before Stanford reeled off six straight.

Fischer scored the first four in the run, the opener in the 6-on-5 and the second on a five-meter penalty. She added the next two a minute apart – at 3:41 and 2:41 – and at even strength. Chloe Harbilas and Kat Klass tacked on two more to make it 6-1 before Emily Powell tallied her second of the first quarter for IU at 1:06. Harbilas scored again with 14 seconds left in the period and Stanford led 7-2 after one.

The Cardinal extended the lead with another 7-2 second quarter to go up 10 at the half, 14-4. Madison Stamen (7:06), Kat Klass (6:13) and Aria Fischer (5:38) started a five-goal run for Stanford to begin the period that was capped by a pair of goals from Sarah Klass at 5:05 and 3:10.

Megan Abarta (2:38) and Gillian Gatecliff (1:38) pulled IU within eight with back-to-back goals, but that would be the last offense for Indiana. The Hoosiers wouldn't score over the game's final 9:38 while Stanford reeled off 13 unanswered, including three from Berggren and Indart and the final two of Makenzie Fischer's six-goal outing.

Stanford wraps up its annual home invitational tomorrow against No. 4 Cal at 12:30 p.m.
