TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Carolyn Lee twirled a gem against Western Michigan on Saturday morning at the Kajikawa Classic, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run on five hits with no walks while striking out three to guide Stanford (3-0) to a 5-1 win over the Broncos (0-3). The right-hander needed just 64 pitches to record the victory and move to 1-0 on the year.
While the Card opened the game up with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, Lee was locked in a pitcher's duel early with Bronco starter, Sydney Stefanick. Stefanick ultimately allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Offensively, Stanford received the bulk of its run support from freshman Emily Klingaman. The native of Vienna, Va. finished 2-for-2 with a triple, four RBI and her first career home run – a three-run shot to provide breathing room in the sixth. Klingaman also put the Card on the board in the second, splitting the gap in left centerfield to plate Hannah Howell, who had reached via a two-out walk one play earlier.
Junior backstop Montana Dixon also drove in a run in the win, contributing a clutch two-out RBI-single back up the box in the third inning.
The Cardinal will play the second game of the day at 1:30 p.m. PT, matching up against Seattle University at the Tempe Sports Complex in Tempe, Ariz.
