Podium for Fencers

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Two Stanford student-athletes made the podium and helped the Cardinal finish 11th on Friday in the NCAA Fencing Championships at the Wolstein Center.

Senior Sean Strong placed sixth in epee and sophomore Lucas Orts earned 10th in foil during the two-day competition. Additionally, junior Samuel Kwong took 22nd in saber.

With 22 teams competing, Stanford amassed 31 points. Columbia/Barnard won the team title with 90 points.

Strong earned second-team All-American for the second consecutive year after claiming seventh in 2018. He finished 15th in 2017 and 23rd in 2016.

Orts was an honorable mention All-American.

"I'm very proud of Sean for qualifying four years in a row and becoming an All-American again," said co-head coach Lisa Posthumous. "I'm also very pleased with Lucas. Samuel fenced hard and I'm looking forward to him coming back next year ready to win."

On Friday night, Orts was named the winner of the Elite 90 award presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average of all participants in the NCAA Championships. Orts has a 4.012 GPA.

On Saturday, the two-day women's competition begins. The Cardinal will be represented by sophomore Madeline Liao in foil, graduate student Kaleigh Mentzer in saber and freshman Hanna Lee in epee.
