Long Beach and Irvine, Calif. - No. 14 Stanford competed in the Belmont Classic in Long Beach, California on Saturday, sweeping its first match against Nebraska and dropping its second match, 4-1, against No. 9 Long Beach State.
The Cardinal (7-9) traveled to Irvine, California on Sunday for its final three matches of the weekend. The team swept its first two matches of the day against Irvine Valley College and Concordia and lost its last match, 4-1, against No. 17 Grand Canyon University.
The No. 3 pairing, Amelia Smith and Maddie Dailey, secured Stanford's lone point in its match against Long Beach State. After losing the second set by only two points, the duo battled back to win the third set, 15-10.
It was Morgan Hentz and Sunny Villapando, playing as a new pair at the two, who secured the Cardinal's only point against the Lopes on Sunday.
In its match against Concordia, Stanford swept every pairing in straight sets.
Stanford stays in Southern California to play back-to-back matches against CSUN at 11:30 a.m. and Pepperdine at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The matches will be held at Zuma Beach in Malibu, California.
