STANFORD, Calif. - No. 7 Stanford opened its three-match, four-day stretch with a 7-0 victory over UC Davis on Wednesday afternoon.
Winners of seven in a row, Stanford (12-1, 3-0 Pac-12) notched its eighth shutout overall in what was the third attempt to play UC Davis (4-10, 2-3 Big West) this season. Originally scheduled for Feb. 2 but postponed due to inclement weather, the match was once again shifted due to rain on Monday afternoon.
After claiming the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, the Cardinal collected singles wins from Emily Arbuthnott, Emma Higuchi and Melissa Lord to secure the match.
Stanford, which has won 57 of its last 60 home matches, dominated singles play by surrendering three games or fewer in every set at all six singles spots.
A pair of top-15 opponents await later in the week, as Stanford travels south to square off against No. 9 UCLA (11-3, 3-0 Pac-12) and No. 13 USC (12-2, 3-0 Pac-12). The Cardinal has won three of its four meetings against nationally-ranked teams this season, having already defeated No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Vanderbilt and No. 18 LSU.
With No. 19 California (9-3, 3-0 Pac-12) also making the trip to SoCal this weekend, there is an opportunity for one of those four unbeatens to take command of the Pac-12 race.
Friday's match against UCLA will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks, representing the Cardinal's only appearance on the network during the regular season.
