TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 12 Stanford came away with a split on Saturday afternoon at the Pac-12 South Invitational.
Stanford (1-5) collected its first win of the season in the opening match, defeating Oregon 4-1.
The No. 3 pairing, Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, put the Cardinal on the board first with a 21-14, 21-12 victory. They were followed by Maddie Dailey and Jordan McKinney's 21-18, 21-11 win at the four.
Shannon Richardson and Blake Sharp, who played as a new pair at the five, clinched the match for the Cardinal with a 21-16, 21-16 win.
The Nos. 1 and 2 pairings continued into third sets after the Cardinal had already clinched the match. Tori Ashkinos and Courtney Bowen closed out their third set with a 15-10 victory at the two.
Stanford came up short against No. 2 USC in the second match, falling 5-0.
The Trojans cliched the first three matches early with straight-set wins at the Nos.1, 4 and 5. The third flight fought to get the Cardinal on the board, forcing the lone three-set match.
Stanford continues play at the Pac-12 South Invitational on Sunday, facing No. 14 Arizona at 10:30 a.m. The match will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.
