Owning the Rivalry

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford put the finishing touches on another perfect Pac-12 regular season, taking down No. 14 California 6-1 in the Big Slam on Saturday afternoon.

Riding a 14-match winning streak as one of the hottest teams in the country, Stanford (19-1, 10-0 Pac-12) has now won 37 consecutive regular-season conference matches dating back to March 5, 2016, when it lost 4-3 at Arizona State.

Three-time defending conference champion Stanford had already locked up the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Pac-12 Championships, slated for April 24-27 in Ojai, Calif. But Saturday's match represented another opportunity to collect a top-15 victory, with California (12-7, 6-4 Pac-12) having defeated Florida, Pepperdine and USC.

The rivalry result was all too familiar, as Stanford has won 15 of the last 20 meetings against California dating back to 2010.

Stanford seized the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, with Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon teaming up for a 6-2 win to secure the early advantage.

Caroline Lampl made it 2-0 following a 6-2, 6-1 win over Katerina Stloukalova at the No. 3 spot. It was the 100th career singles victory for Lampl, who has won a career-best 17 in a row since her last loss on Jan. 18.

Janice Shin contributed a 6-1, 6-2 triumph on court five, putting Stanford on the brink of clinching.

With all four remaining matches in a third set, the Cardinal made it official, when Gordon outlasted Rosenqvist 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 position for her 20th win of the season.

Tournament play at the Pac-12 Championships begins Thursday.
