Cardinal Adds Caskey

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford has hired Neil Caskey as an assistant coach for the men's swimming and diving program, as announced Thursday.

"I would like to thank both Dan Schemmel and sport administrator Tommy Gray for providing me with this phenomenal opportunity to join the program," said Caskey, a native of Houston. "Dan has always been someone I have had a tremendous amount of respect for both as a coach and as a person. He has one of the most brilliant minds in our sport, brings a contagious enthusiasm to the pool each day and I can't wait to get to work with him on The Farm."

Caskey spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin where he coached both the men's and women's programs. During the 2016-17 season, Caskey oversaw 12 Wisconsin records on the men's side with five swimmers earning All-America status. On the women's side, freshman Cierra Runge set five school records with nine Badgers earning All-America honors.

In 2015-16, Caskey's first season with Wisconsin, Matt Hutchins earned Big 10 Swimmer of the Year honors after setting school records in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles – the Badgers set a total of seven school records between the men's and women's programs.

As a student-athlete at Texas (2008-12), Caskey was a two-time NCAA champion in the 800-yard freestyle relay, an eight-time All-American and eight-time Big 12 Conference champion, serving as a team captain during his senior season after helping the Longhorns win the 2010 NCAA Championship. Caskey ended his career as the Texas and Big 12 record holder in the 200-yard butterfly, graduating in 2013 with a bachelors' degree in advertising. Caskey also owns a masters' degree in educational leadership and policy analysis from Wisconsin.

"I am elated to have Neil join us on The Farm," said Schemmel, who was announced as the Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming on May 14. "We spent three seasons together at Wisconsin and I witnessed firsthand his character, passion and knowledge of the sport. Neil brings a wealth of experience in what it takes to be elite but, more importantly, is an outstanding individual that will be a great role model for our student-athletes. He is going to help us achieve special things in the coming years."

Schemmel spent the previous three seasons as head coach of both the men's and women's programs at University of Hawai'i. The women's program won the MPSF conference championship in each of those three seasons while the men's team captured its first conference championship since 2006. Under his leadership, Hawai'i produced a combined 57 individual conference champions, 42 school records, 20 conference records and six All-Americans.

In 102 seasons, Stanford has captured eight national championships and 64 Pac-12 conference championships, including 31 consecutive from 1982-2012. Individual swimmers and divers have combined for 147 national championships and 360 conference championships, while seven former Cardinal were named to the Pac-12 All-Century team in 2016.
