STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford has played host to important meets throughout its history, including the 1941 NCAA Championships, the 1932 and 1960 Olympic Trials, and the epic 1962 USA-USSR dual that has been described as "the greatest track meet of all time."
But there never has been a meet at Stanford with the quality of Sunday's Prefontaine Classic. Of the 16 events contested as part of the IAAF Diamond League meet, 13 Cobb Track and Angell Field records were broken.
The oldest of those – Jeff Fishback's 9:06.8 two-mile from the Pacific Association AAU meet of 1962 – was broken by 59 seconds.
Six meet records were broken and there were six world-leading marks were established and nine American-leading marks. The meet annually is held in Eugene, Oregon, but because of the reconstruction of Hayward Field, the meet was relocated to Stanford for one year.
After the facility was renovated in 1996, Cobb Track and Angell Field has been the site of the 2002 and 2003 USATF Championships and is annually home to the Payton Jordan Invitational, the nation's premier distance running carnival.
Stanford has a proud track and field tradition that dates back to 1893. Stanford's teams -- men's and women's indoor and outdoor track, and cross country -- have combined for 13 national team championships, 86 NCAA individual titles, and 946 All-America honors by 282 different athletes. The program has produced 64 different Olympians, including 19 different medalists and nine gold-medal winners, including 2016 women's pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi.
This year, Stanford was named men's Program of the Year by the USTFCCCA for its top-five NCAA finishes in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Last year, Stanford earned the women's Program of the Year honor.
