The Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) named Albane Valenzuela as the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Edith Cummings Munson Award on Tuesday afternoon. The award is presented annually to the Women's Division I golfer who is an upperclassman and both a WGCA All-American Scholar and All-American. If multiple golfers qualify, the award goes to the individual with the highest GPA.
Valenzuela, by virtue of her 4.021 cumulative GPA in political science, was honored as Stanford's second recipient of the award. Hilar Homeyer won the award in 1999. A senior-to-be, Valenzuela was a WGCA first team All-American this season in addition to her All-American Scholar honors.
The Geneva, Switzerland native set the school record for scoring average by a junior (72.36) and became the program's first-ever Pac-12 Women's Golfer of the Year. She had five Top-10 finishes, including a win at the East Lake Cup, a tie for first at the Pac-12 Championships and a sixth-place finish at NCAA Championships.
A donation of $5,000 is given from the Curtis & Edith Cummings Munson Foundation to the general scholarship fund of the recipient's institution.
