STANFORD, Calif. – Kiana Williams and the United States won silver at the recently concluded Pan American Games in Lima, Peru while Alyssa Jerome and Canada finished sixth.
The U.S. won its first four games at the tournament, beating Argentina (70-62), the U.S. Virgin Islands (103-55), Colombia (75-63) and Puerto Rico (62-59), before falling in the championship to Brazil, 79-73. Williams, playing in her first event with USA Basketball, averaged 5.2 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 17.8 minutes per game.
Jerome started all four games for the Canadians and averaged 4.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per outing. Canada was 1-3 in Lima with a victory against Paraguay (90-64) and losses to Brazil (79-71), Puerto Rico (72-63) and Argentina (59-54).
Williams and Jerome were two of a number of Cardinal that suited up for national teams this summer. Alumna Karlie Samuelson '17 led Great Britain to a fourth-place finish at 2019 FIBA Women's EuroBasket in early July and a berth in next year's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments while freshman Fran Belibi won her third international gold medal with the United States at the FIBA U19 World Cup in late July.
