STANFORD, Calif. – Serving as the head coach of the United States Greco-Roman Junior World Team, Stanford assistant Nate Engel led the U.S. to three medalists in Tallinn, Estonia, at the Junior World Championships.
The United States finished seventh in the team race with 60 points. Russia won the team title with 157 points, with Iran in second (121 points) and Turkey in third (117 pounds).
The USA finished the tournament with three medals, for the first time in the history of the 17-20 year old age-group, which is now Junior and was previously called Espoir. The USA has won two World medals six different times (1991, 1993, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018).
Stanford redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens finished 1-1 at 72 kg to place 10th and score team points for the United States.
For the first time in program history, the Cardinal has three world team members in a single year. In addition to Eischens, alum Ryan Mango (2009-14) will represent the U.S. at the Senior World Championships at 63 kg in Greco-Roman in September and senior Gabriel Townsell will wrestle at the U23 World Championships at 57 kg in freestyle in late October.
