Cardinal Opens with Sweep

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Behind 16 kills from Kathryn Plummer, No. 1 Stanford opened the season with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 win over College of Charleston, Friday, in front of more than 1,700 fans at TD Arena.
 
Stanford has now won 33 matches in a row, dating back to Sept. 1, 2018. The Cardinal is 3-0 in season openers under head coach Kevin Hambly.
 
Plummer led all players with 16 kills on .414 hitting and seven digs. Senior opposite Audriana Fitzmorris added nine kills on .615 hitting and three blocks, including the 500th of her career. She is ninth in program history in career blocks and three away from passing Kerri Walsh.
 


Senior libero Morgan Hentz collected 14 digs and had four assists, while junior Meghan McClure tallied 11 digs and four kills.
 
Senior Jenna Gray controlled the offense with 33 assists and the setter put down a match-high three aces. Graduate transfer Madeleine Gates finished with seven kills on 13 errorless swings to hit .538 in her Cardinal debut. She also registered three digs and her first collegiate service ace.
 
As a team, Stanford hit .354 and racked up 55 digs and 6.0 blocks. The Cardinal held the Cougars to a .051 attack percentage. In total, 15 Cardinal appeared in the match.
 
Freshmen Kendall Kipp and Selina Xu made their collegiate debuts as they subbed into the match in the second and connected for a Kipp kill shortly thereafter. McKenna Vicini started at middle in the third set and registered a block.
 
Stanford will be back in action on Saturday against Duke. First serve is slated for 1:30 p.m. PT from TD Arena in Charleston. The Blue Devils dropped their season opener to Michigan State on Friday.
