DOHA, Qatar – Five Stanford graduates are competing at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships, which began Friday and continue through Oct. 6.
The list is impressive. Greek pole vaulter Katerina Stefanidi is the reigning women's world and Olympic champion. Kori Carter is the reigning women's world champ in the 400 hurdles. Valarie Allman, 24, is the two-time U.S. champ and competing on her second world team. Decathlete Harrison Williams, 23, is making his first world appearance. And Steven Solomon is a captain of the Australian team and competing in the men's 400 and 4x400 relay.
If Williams betters his personal best score of 8,188, which he earned while placing third at the U.S. Championships, it will count as a school record. Williams is the only athlete in the meet who competed for Stanford in 2019, winning the NCAA indoor heptathlon title and finishing second in the NCAA decathlon outdoors. This meet would count for Stanford record purposes because it is an extension of his collegiate season.
