STANFORD, Calif. - After a hard-fought battle across 14 races, junior Christina Sakellaris finished second at the LaserPerformance ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship, co-hosted by Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the University of California Santa Barbara. Freshman Hallie Schiffman finished up in seventh, while sophomore John Kirkpatrick took 11th on the men's side.
The championships included the top 18 men and top 18 women singlehanded sailors in the nation.
Scores on the women's side were extremely tight after the first nine races, with only one point separating Jacksonville's Charlotte Rose, Boston College's Sophia Reineke, and Sakellaris. With five races left to be contested, Reineke managed three top-five finishes, including taking first in the penultimate race, to capture the title at 59 points. Sakellaris, the reigning champion from 2018, followed in second with 68 points. The native of Milton, Mass. finished in the top three five times, including second four times, with all five stretching from races three through seven.
Schiffman also impressed for the Cardinal, finishing in the top-four four times – including winning races 10 and 14, and placing second in legs five and 12.
Kirkpatrick finished 11th overall after posting three top-five finishes. St. Mary's College of Maryland sophomore Leo Boucher took top honors on the men's side, finishing with 65 points to edge Miami's Richard McCann (68) and U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Gage Schoenherr (69) in the top three.
Stanford will now prepare for the Coed Pacific Coast Championship beginning this Saturday in Santa Barbara.
