Sunday Shootout

STANFORD, Calif. – Two goals and two assists from Catarina Macario led No. 2 Stanford to a 6-2 win over Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

"As we approach the postseason, today was a good reminder that there's always room for us to improve," said the Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe. "We'll look to tighten things up, defensively, but we will always take a win in this conference, which is full of quality teams like Arizona."

Macario, the national leader in virtually every offensive statistic, continued her sensational season with another two-goal performance, her eighth multi-goal outing of the year. Naomi Girma, Sophia Smith and Abby Greubel also scored while Katie Meyer made one save to earn the win. Stanford's shutout streak, which dated to Sept. 28, ended at 832:03 minutes.

The Cardinal (17-1-0, 10-0-0 Pac-12) pushes its unbeaten run in Pac-12 play to 40 games while its unbeaten streak at home reached 37 games. Macario's 16th assist of the season ties a program record shared by Christen Press and Macario, who led the nation with 16 assists as a freshman in 2017. Macario also passes Kelley O'Hara for third on Stanford's all-time points list with 148.

Macario needed less than eight minutes to break the 0-0 tie. Maya Doms poked it through the Wildcats' (10-6-1, 4-5-1) back line, allowing Macario to pick her spot and slide it past Hope Hisey. In the 30th minute, Macario's free kick forced a diving save by Hisey and Girma was quickest to the rebound, scoring her first goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Arizona pulled one back in the 35th minute with Jill Aguilera chipping Meyer from inside the box. Stanford restored its two-goal advantage moments later in the 39th minute when Macario finished a brilliant team move that was started by Kiki Pickett. Pickett raced into acres of space from her starting position of right back and laid it off to Sam Tran on the right wing. Tran spotted the run of Macario and put it on a plate for Macario to finish at the near post, making it 3-1.

Doms' shot off the post in the 41st minute deflected in for an own goal and Greubel scored a penalty kick, which she won, in the 45th minute to make it 5-1 at the break.

Aguilera scored her second goal of the match in the 56th minute to make it 5-2 before Smith scored a beautiful goal in the 63rd to make it 6-2. Smith collected a corner kick from Macario, danced past her marker and curled a shot into the top corner which left substitute goalkeeper Kendyll Humphreys no chance.

On Thursday, the Cardinal clinched its fifth consecutive Pac-12 championship with a 3-0 win over Arizona State. It was Stanford's 14th Pac-12 championship and ninth in the last 11 seasons. Stanford is the first program in history to win the Pac-12 outright five seasons in a row.

No. 2 Stanford wraps up regular-season action on Friday when it plays host to California at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks. Prior to kickoff, Stanford will honor its five graduating seniors with Senior Day ceremonies.
