STANFORD, Calif. – Three Cardinal each scored four times and No. 2 Stanford blew past No. 4 Cal, 17-10, to close out its annual home invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Makenzie Fischer, Kat Klass and Sarah Klass each had four-goal performances and the Cardinal (6-0) continued its perfect start to 2019 with its sixth consecutive victory. Aria Fischer also had a hat trick for Stanford as the sisters Klass and Fischer combined for 15 of their team's 17 goals. Madison Berggren and Cassidy Wiley added the other two tallies for the Cardinal.
Stanford did most of its damage in the first and third quarters, outscoring the Bears by six total goals with a 5-2 first-period edge and a 4-1 third-quarter advantage.
Kat Klass scored in the 6-on-5 at 7:25 for Stanford, but Cal answered with a goal from Kitty Lynn Joustra at 5:18. Madison Berggren converted on the power play for the Cardinal at 5:04 and Sarah Klass tacked on one more at 3:26 before Emma Wright pulled one back for the Golden Bears at 2:35.
Makenzie Fischer took advantage of another man-up situation for Stanford late in the first (1:18) and added another with four seconds left in the quarter after the Cardinal called timeout to draw up what it wanted.
Wright was successful in the 6-on-5 for Cal less than a minute into the second quarter, but would be kicked out twice 90-seconds apart midway through the frame and had her day end with three exclusions in just under 13 minutes of action.
After a 3-3 second quarter, Stanford came out on fire in the third. Kat Klass scored at 7:29 and 5:16 while Makenzie Fischer rattled home a five-meter penalty at 4:07 to make it 11-5 Cardinal.
Jackie Sanders scored for Cal the next trip down after Fischer's penalty, but Aria Fischer did the same for Stanford on the ensuing possession to push the lead to 12-6 through three quarters.
Thea Walsh played all four quarters in the cage for the Cardinal and made four saves.
Stanford is off next weekend and returns to action when it hosts the Chinese National Team for an exhibition on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
