NCAA Participants Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. – Six members of the Stanford fencing team have been selected to compete in the NCAA Championships co-hosted by Cleveland State and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, March 21-24 in Cleveland, it was announced Tuesday.
 
Four captured gold medals on Sunday at the NCAA Regional Championships at UC San Diego. They were Samuel Kwong in men's sabre, Sean Strong in men's epee, Lucas Orts in men's foil and Madeline Liao in women's foil. Additionally, Hanna Lee will represent the Cardinal in women's epee and Kaleigh Mentzer will compete in women's foil.
 
In the 2018 NCAA Championships, Strong led Stanford by finishing seventh in men's epee and earned All-American honors. He placed 15th in 2017 and 23rd in 2016.
 
Practices start March 20. On the 21st, rounds 1-3 of men's foil begin at 9 a.m. ET, followed by rounds 1-3 of men's epee at 11:30 a.m. ET, and rounds 1-3 of men's sabre at 1:30 p.m. ET.
 
On the 22nd, rounds 4-5 of men's foil, epee and sabre start at 9 a.m. Semifinal and championship bouts begin at 1 p.m. ET.
 
On Saturday, rounds 1-3 of women's foil start at 9 a.m. ET, followed by rounds 1-3 of women's epee at 11 a.m. ET and rounds 1-3 of women's sabre at 1:30 p.m. ET
 
On Sunday, rounds 4-5 of women's foil, epee and sabre get underway at 9 a.m. ET. Semifinal and championship bouts begin at 1 p.m. ET.
 
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts, with the top four finishers in each weapon advancing to the semifinals. Semifinalists will vie for first and second, and non-advancers share third place.
