STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford freshman Haley Jones has been named the 2018-19 Cal-Hi Sports State Girls Athlete of the Year.
Jones is just the second winner to exclusively play basketball in the award's 100-year history, joining Riverside Poly's Cheryl Miller (1980-81). She is the third Girls State Athlete of the Year from Archbishop Mitty, along with Stanford's Kerri Walsh Jennings (1995-96) and Rometra Craig (1998-99). In addition to Walsh Jennings, Jones is the latest in a long list of winners to attend Stanford, including basketball's Jayne Appel-Marinelli (2005-06) and Candice Wiggins (2003-04), water polo's Maggie Steffens (2010-11), volleyball's Alex Klineman (2006-07) and swimming's Janet Evans (1987-88; 1988-89).
Jones graduated from Mitty as the school's all-time leading scorer, surpassing Walsh Jennings, Craig and WNBA All-Star Danielle Robinson. Her 2,126 points are 248 points ahead of Walsh Jennings, her .638 career field goal percentage in also No. 1 in school history and her 1,046 rebounds are fourth.
Jones is the nation's consensus No. 1 recruit and Naismith and WBCA National High School Player of the Year. She averaged 26.1 points and 12.1 rebounds a game in her senior season and was also chosen as the Gatorade Player of the Year in California. Jones was named MVP of the Jordan Brand Classic on April 20 after scoring a game-high 17 points on 8-of-17 shooting to go with five rebounds and a game-high four assists.
Stanford's incoming class, which also includes five-star talents Fran Belibi, Hannah Jump and Ashten Prechtel is ranked second nationally by espnW HoopGurlz.
Stanford checks in at No. 3 in ESPN's early women's college basketball rankings and will host Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA in addition to Ohio State and Tennessee as part of its impressive home schedule next year.
