Thomas Called Again by U.S. Soccer

STANFORD, Calif. – Andrew Thomas has been named to the U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team roster for a training camp from Sept. 1-10 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, just south of San Diego.

The 24-player roster will face Japan on Sept. 9 in Chula Vista, another step in the U-23 MNT's journey to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as the USA aims to qualify for its first Men's Olympic Tournament since 2008. Concacaf recently announced that the 2020 Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Championship will be held March 20-April 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico. That tournament will send two teams from the North America, Central American and the Caribbean to Tokyo.

Thomas, who begins his redshirt sophomore campaign with the Cardinal this evening at Penn State, is the only collegian called into camp. Last week he was named to both the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI second team and the Pac-12's preseason all-conference squad.

Earlier this summer, Thomas was called for a combined preparation camp with players from the United States' Senior and U-23 Men's National Teams from May 26-June 2 in Annapolis, Md. and he also participated in a U-23 training camp in Herriman, Utah from June 9-16.

Thomas had a  superb first season in goal for Stanford, which finished eighth in the nation in team goals against average (0.625) in 2018. He was ninth individually in that category with a conference-leading 0.626 goals against average and also was third in the country in save percentage (.854), sixth in solo shutouts (11) and 13th in total saves (82).

An engineering physics major raised in London, Thomas was born in Moscow and holds triple citizenship (United Kingdom, United States, Russia).

The nation's most successful collegiate men's soccer program over the last half-decade, Stanford has won three of the last four NCAA titles, five consecutive Pac-12 championships and posted a 77-14-18 (.789) overall record since 2014.
