Stanford Wins West Invite

Team results Opens in a new window

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Stanford men's fencing team remained undefeated by going 4-0 to win the West Invitational at UC San Diego's RIMAC Arena on Sunday.

The Stanford women placed third in the six-team West Invitational by going 3-2.

The Cardinal opened the weekend by going 3-0 to win the Western Conference Championships on Saturday.

Since Florida, one of Stanford's opponents on Sunday, is a club team, results against the Gators are unofficial. Therefore, the Stanford men are 6-0 after the season-opening weekend and the Cardinal women, who finished second on Saturday, are 4-3.

"I'm so happy to come home with a gold and silver in our conference," Stanford coach Lisa Posthumus said. "I am excited to see what this team can bring."

Just as the Western Conference tournament did on Saturday, Sunday's men's event was decided by Stanford's match against UC San Diego, with Stanford winning, 17-12. Lucas Orts and Julian Cheng each went 3-0 in the match to help Stanford's foil team win, 7-2.

Combining both tournaments, sophomore Noah Matricciani, in the sabre, had Stanford's best record, going 15-3, for an 83 percent winning percentage.

Robin Cheong had the team's best record in the epee, going 13-5 (72 percent). And Orts, a returning All-American, had the best mark in the foil, at 13-4 (76 percent).

Senior Amanda Han went 11-2 (85 percent) in the epee for the top winning percentage among Stanford women. Caroline Wang had the best mark in the sabre, at 8-4 (67 percent), and Madeline Liao went 14-4 (78 percent) to lead the Cardinal in the foil.

Stanford's next test will be the Midwest Duals at Northwestern, which won the women's competition on Sunday, on Feb. 1-2.

"The team is full of spirit and camaraderie," Stanford men's captain Samuel Kwong said. "It was a great start to the season and we are ready to dominate at the Midwest duals."
