Card Claims First Victory

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford got a much-needed start from sophomore right-hander Alex Williams on Saturday, as he went seven innings and allowed just one run to lead the Cardinal to a 2-1 win. Cody Jensen came on for the save, striking out two over the final two innings.

Stanford played from ahead for the first time all season on Sunday, as the Card struck for a run in the bottom of the first. After the first two were retired, Tim Tawa singled up the middle and scored from first on a dropped fly ball.

Fullerton quickly responded, as a two-out walk was followed by two straight singles to knot the score at one run apiece. Williams pitched out of it, however, to keep the game tied.

The Cardinal took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, as Nick Brueser reached on an error with one out. Christian Robinson then singled to move Brueser to third, before Nick Bellafronto's sacrifice fly to left brought him home.

Williams set the Titans down in order in the fifth and sixth innings and pitched around a base runner in the seventh to finish his day with seven strong innings for the win.

Jensen came on in relief in the eighth, facing the minimum over his two innings of work to earn the save.

Stanford is back on action on Tuesday night, when it travels to Santa Clara for the first road game of the season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium.
