STANFORD, Calif. - Led by four goals, an assist and two steals from Madison Stamen, No. 2 Stanford held off No. 7 Michigan on the opening day of the Stanford Invitational, moving to 6-0 on the year.
Earlier in the day, the Cardinal recorded a 12-4 victory in an exhibition match against 11th-ranked UC Davis at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford opened the match with a balanced attack on offense, getting goals from Sarah Klass, Hannah Shabb and Stamen to start the game up 3-1 over the Wolverines.
The two teams swapped scores to end the first period with Stanford ahead 4-3, before the Wolverines took their first lead at 5-3 following turnovers and blocked shots from the Cardinal.
Stanford responded on both ends to end the half, getting goals from Stamen, Lexi Rowell and Klass, while the defense held Michigan scoreless for the last five minutes of play to regain the lead at 7-5.
The lead swelled to 9-5 as Stanford opened the third period with another two goals, this time from Stamen and Kayla Constandse. Michigan closed the gap to a two-goal difference twice late, but the Cardinal held strong to disrupt the Wolverine offense and leave the pool with a victory.
Emalia Eichelberger and Thea Walsh split duties in goal for the Cardinal, as Eichelberger stopped six shots.
Stanford is now 19-0 all-time against Michigan. The Cardinal is 6-0 for the 11th straight season.
