IRVINE, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford fell behind 5-2 early, but exerted its strength after a slow start to take down No. 22 San Diego State in the opening game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, advancing to the winner's bracket.

The Cardinal improve to 10-0 for the fourth straight season.

Stanford responded to the game's first goal with a score from Lexi Rowell, but the Aztecs won the opening eight minutes, going on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead before Hannah Constandse scored in the final seconds ot the period.

Down 5-2, the top-ranked Cardinal stayed calm and locked down its attack, scoring three straight, all from different goal scorers, to even the game at 5-5.

The Aztecs briefly regained the lead at 6-5 before Sarah Klass and Hannah Shabb used a tag-team approach, each assisting on one goal to the other, to give Stanford its first lead of the morning at 7-6.

SDSU tied the game at 7-7 to open the second half, but it was all Cardinal after that, led by first a goal scored, then an assist to Katie Lyons from Sarah Klass, before the third goal of the day from Rowell, a new career high.

Klass pushed the run to 4-0 with a minute remaining in the fourth, and the Aztecs netted their final score early in the fourth.

Thea Walsh made a career-high 12 saves in goal for the Cardinal, with a .600 save percentage.
