IRVINE, Calif. - In a rematch of last year's national championship, No. 1 Stanford picked up its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon to No. 4 USC, 10-5.
The loss drops the Cardinal to 12-1 on the year.
No. 1 Stanford 5 - No. 4 USC 10
The Cardinal got in an early hole and couldn't recover, as the Trojans raced out to a 4-0 lead while Stanford struggled with missed shots and turnovers in the first period.
The lead ballooned to 5-0 for USC before Stanford got on the board with a goal from Hannah Shabb midway through the second, followed by a powerplay score from the Cardinal from Sophie Wallace.
The Trojans responded with another 5-0 run, however, to earn a 10-2 advantage. Like they've done in the past, the Cardinal put the clamps on in the fourth period, but it was too little too late to recover.
Emalia Eichelberger collected seven saves in net for the Cardinal.
